Due Wednesday, November 5
Five Week Web Project: http://www.pgrocer.net/Cis44/assignments/fstwebprojS07.html

For those of you that still need to complete past assignments, you may use this opportunity to incorporate the individual assignment(s) into your five week project. If you chose to do so, you must indicate to me which project you have incorporated. In order to get credit for the assignment, you should take the requirements to the next level (include work that goes beyond the original assignment).

Please use this space to post your five week project URL for your peers to review and provide constructive feedback.

I am not understanding how to setup my page on brinkster. Can someone help?

Hi,

For this project, I may use my old websites I created for the class assignments. I may use syllabus and form assignments as my project because I didn't start working on the project because I'm busy working on weekly assignments each week. Is anyone doing a project on the weekly assignments we did in past? If so, could anyone tell me what you will do? I'm little confused that we need to take the next level on the project if we do project on weekly assignments. Could someone give me few examples what she means? I created a five page website on syllabus and form assignment. It has all the information about the class' syllabus with form. Let me know if you are doing something like this for the project. Thank you!

Jessica,
I haven't done my website either, or even picked my premise.

I thinks she means that you can elaborate and incorporate what we have done in regular homework assignments, into your web site assignment... if you haven't already done them and turned them in. I have done mine, so I will choose something else.

James -
On Brinkster when you log on there should be a control panel. Go to Classic File Manager and from there you can upload your pages and images and then preview and edit them. I think that's the easiest way to do it, the regular file manager doesn't work as well. Hope that helps. Natalie

Jessica - that's great!

Now I'm hoping someone can help me with the print screen. I can alt print screen and paste it to Microsoft works but it is tiny and I cannot seem to resize it.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Rita McLaughlin said...

I found a zoom button i can use.

Now I am having trouble with "
" getting validated. At times I am being told to use a list of other tags including p . Does anyone have any ideas as to why? I get the feeling if I change from strict to transitiional it will validate just fine. grrrr

Nan Tremblay said...

Rita,
2 suggestions:

For resizing an image, mouse over the lower right corner...hopefully you will see a double-sided arrow. If you grasp it, you can resize with it. If you hold the shift key while doing this....it should preserve the aspect ratio (meaning your proportions won't change).

Re: validating strict: I had a devil of a time doing it if I had break tags. It just kept rejecting it, so I am using p tags when I can or I validate transitional, when I need break tags. Also, if you can, sometimes the explanations when it rejects your validation, might shed light on the matter.

Rita McLaughlin said...

Thanks Nan. I'll try both. I'm doing really well with my web site. I still have some more coding to do, but the major part is done. The problem is I keep wanting just another page! :)
LOL

It is going. I am getting there little by little. Anyone have examples of site maps

Rita McLaughlin said...

Bret - I am having a lot of trouble with Comcast allowing me in and then letting me set my first page as the default or index page. do you have any suggestions? It wants me to create using their templates. :(
Thanks!

Rita McLaughlin said...

Bret - don't bother. I am using Brinkster instead. Thanks.
I must say, some of their file commands don't seem to work well; the move is always calling errors.

Bret Brown said...

Rita,

I've seen what you describe. I found another way into Comcast where I don't have to use their web page building tool.

Here are the steps that worked for me.

1. Open IE (I'm using IE 7 on Vista but it should not matter)
2. For the address line enter the address ftp://(username):(password)@upload.comcast.net
3. In place of (username) enter the primary email account that is associated with your comcast account. For me this is Bret.Brown
4. In place of (password) enter you comcast email account password
5. Once the page loads your are now connected to Comcast via ftp rather than http. You should see some form of a crude directory structure.
6. At the top of the page that displayed for me, there is a note:
"To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer." The "Page" is a toolbar button that for me appears at the far right of the IE window. If you click this then Windows Explorer opens and it behaves like Explorer and you can copy and paste your files and directories.
7. At work I have IE 6. When I entered the address above in IR 6 I just saw the ftp directory structure. However I was able to drag my files from Windows Explorer into the IE window pointed at the ftp directory and the files were uploaded.

Here is a link that describes what I just tried to describe:
Upload Comcast Net

Once you've uploaded your files the address for your web site will look something like

http://home.comcast.net/~bret.brown/raptorcenter/

raptorcenter is the directory under my account where I am building my web site. Most of the site works but I still have some work to do. The contact us page is not yet created but I think that the other pages are there; though the content needs to be updated on some of the pages.

I hope this helps. If you are still having trouble, you can send me an email at Bret.Brown@comcast.net and I can respond with some screen shots that might help.

Good luck,
Bret

Rose,

I'm not sure what to do about the site map. The project assignment said that there were examples on the pgrocer.net web site but I looked and couldn't find any examples.

I was thinking of creating a diagram is visio and pasting the image into a work document. The diagram would use boxes with the names of the pages and lines to show which pages have links to the other pages.

I think that this would describe how to navigate through my site.

I'm not sure though if this is what you want. Where is there an example of the pgrocer.net web site?

Thanks,
Bret

Rita McLaughlin said...

Bret - most of what you just explained, I did see in ComCast. I gave up and have all but one of my pages loaded into Brinkster now. Its not the greatest let me tell you! :(
Trying to save some stuff, I kept getting errors. For them being so stuffy, you'd think their web pages would work perfectly!
I'm feeling so yucky right now I'm almost had enough for the day.
the site map at work was really neat, it was all links explaining where each one brought you. But it was in a tree structure:
Health:
Medical
Eye Care
Dental
Life Insurance
etc.
problem is this is on our Intranet.
:(

Rita McLaughlin said...

Bret - go to www.amica.com and at the upper left is a word site map just like the one on our intranet.
good luck!

James said...

How can I put an image in the middle of 2 images on the left and the right. Please advise someone.

Rita McLaughlin said...

James - you might have better luck using a one row 3 column table. Resize your images to all the same size in an image progam (ie Photoshop) and use padding in the cells to make everything evenly spaced.
It looks like align is deprected, I am not sure if center would work.
good luck!

Another example of a sitemap is located at http://websteronline.com/servlets/com.websterbank.servlets.Content?pagename=site_map&session_id=. It is the webster bank website and has a nice layout.

Rita McLaughlin said...

James how are you doing getting set up on Brinkster? I am just trying to do that last piece called web maintenance and it won't let me bring in my changed page. :(
I think I have the hang of most of the rest of it. I made a ton of mistakes however.

James said...

Rita, I have it up on the server but I am not done with it yet. The maintenance part isnt making too much sense to me and I am also having issues making contact us and sitemap.

Nan Tremblay said...

Hi,
I am nearly done with my site, but I have not uploaded it yet or done a site map. I am not using brinkster, but rather my own hosting company, which is http.www.addr.com. I have had it for a few years now.

James, did you get your image centering issues resolved? I centered an image with a div tag within the table cell. I also had other images with varying alignments, so I created class tags for each scenario (.imgleft or .imgright) so I could float them left or right. I wanted my text to flow around them.

James said...

I did get thyem centered but I just used the float justify. I do not need too much text around them more just the pics so people can see them. I am having a problem with the site map. I am not understanding how to create it and make the site map link so it sits at the bottom very small and make a contact us very small link at the top. Please advise someone.

James said...

Hi Nan, I used the float justify as I do not need text around my images as they are just pictures. They are a link from my main page to a page with pictures. I am having an issue making a site map and contact us at the top very small. I do not see how to get it up there and the site map at the bottom. Please advise.

Rita McLaughlin said...

James - a site map is simply an outline or flow chart of your pages and how they relate to each other. Start with your first page, then who does he link to? then who does that page link to? and so on. This is easier to draw than write!
Maintenance means once you have your web site up and running, you "fix" or change something. It can be wording or images or anything!
Be sure to take screen shots of the before and after.

I have found the p tag to show up very small also I think h6 can be very small. To be a the top, I think you have to physically code it at the top of your page.
Good Luck!

Hi,

I just finished and validate my website and some pages has problems and don't get it. All of my pages are Transitional validation not strict. Now, I may need help how to publish the website on brinkster because I never publish a website on the internet with publish the files. I usually publish my website on the website program such as dreamwever but this is different. If someone could tell me how to publish the website on this account. My website came out great and it looks like a professional website. Let me know if you know how to publish the website and I figure it out.

I have a question about print screen. Do we need to update the website on each page of the site or just one or two pages? Let me know about that too. Thanks!

Jessica Lappin

Rita McLaughlin said...

Jessica - all of my pages vaidated transitional but they all got the green so you need to fix yours first before you upload them to brinkster.
1. your opening page needs to be named default or index for brinkster.

for maintenance I only changed 1 page and took a before and after shot of that page.

There is a spot on brinkster to upload your files. be sure to click on the "root" or main directory or you will have to move them.
I'll have to look for the help. I printed down 3 sheets of help.
Rita

Rita McLaughlin said...

On Brinkster, the root directory is the one called by my user name. All my files are loaded into that one leaving the other two under it empty.
If you go to Control Panel, the settings are all there you need:
file manager to upload and there is help which I printed out,
User settings, which has or will have your first page name - click on it and you can test.
Then at the top is support for more help.
Rita

Jessica Lappin said...

Okay, Thanks. I vaildated all my pages as transitional and they passed and it is on the internet. I just need to update the few pages after print screen before any changes! Thanks for the help!

Hi,

Here is the posting with the information about the web site I created. My web site is for The Raptor Center at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. This is a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates and cares for Raptors - Birds of Prey, including eagles, hawks, falcons and owls.

I am using my comcast personal web pages support to host my web site. As far as I know and can tell, comcast does not add any ads, etc. to the web sites that it hosts.

You can access my site by clicking on the following link

The Raptor Center

or by entering the following in your browser's address control:

Thanks,
Bret

Bret - you did a fantastic job! Have you ever coded in HTML before? Do you work with these big birds? At the barn where my 2 horses are kept, there were 2 mated pairs of either falcons or red-tails and I got a close photo. Neat birds!

super job. :)
Rita

James said...

wow Brett that is a very nice page. I do not think mine is that complex. Good job.

Your Instructor said...

Jessica,

To answer your question about maintenance.... you only need to take a screen shot of a few pages that you were able to maintain, not every page.

Bret,

Nice Job!

All,

I look forward to seeing your finished products.

Rita and James,
Thank you.

If you can't tell, I love all animals (I should have become a veterinarian). When my oldest son was 2 year old; we stood within a few feet of several 'wood saw' owls. They are only about eight inches high and weigh about 3 oz. It made a hugh impression on me and my son. He still remembers this today (he is 12 now).

I've looked at html but I've never really built a web page or site. That said, I've been programming for more years than I'd like to admit.

I find that programming web pages is in many ways more difficult that other platforms that I've worked with.

Thanks for taking the time to look at the site I built. I really enjoyed researching the information and putting the site together.

If you ever get a chance to visit the raptor center is vermont, I think that you would enjoy the visit.

If you are interested, I used a program called Paint.Net which is free to download. I've never used Photoshop (I can't really afford it) but from what I understand Paint.Net has many of the same features as Photoshop. I used it to produce the banner image out of different images and for sizing the other images to fit the pages better.

Finally I work in Framingham and we have some kind of hawk (I think that it is a red tailed hawk) that lives near our building. I saw it up close yesterday as it flew off cafeteria porch. I also saw it one day when I was driving home; it was sitting on top of a light post on the entrance ramp to the mass pike.

I'm having trouble getting on Access BCC, can anyone tell me if we have class at school or online today?
And also, are we posting links to our web sites here or sending them to the teacher with all the pages and images, etc. Thanks, Natalie

Bret Brown said...

Hi, Many of you may already understand this but I thought I would post it just in case. Until this last project that we had to have hosted and available from anywhere on the internet, we were just opening our html files through the browser. This is not the same as viewing the html pages through a hosting service. Most of the time the pages look the same but there are some things that don't work correctly when you just open the html file in your browser.

On Windows XP Pro and Vista Pro, you can install Microsoft's hosting service called IIS. IIS provides admin programs for creating new web sites and supports 'programming' behind html pages. For simple things IIS is fine but sometimes IIS is harder to work with then you might want.

There is a freely downloadable 'suite' of software call wamp. wamp comes with apache (which provide the same hosting functionality as IIS, My SQL (a relational database product) and support for php which is a programming language for produce html.

As you know our class is focused on html, css and javascript so we don't need MySQL or php support.

However if you install wamp, you 'host' your own site for the purpose of testing it. What this does is allows you to run and view your html pages locally as if your were viewing them from a hosting site.

Apache 'serves' up web pages just like you would see from the hosting company. This way you can test your web site locally before posting it where all of the world can see. I used wamp (Apache) locally on my laptop to test my web site and then uploaded my html pages from time to time to comcast to show the before and after and just to see how it performed under comcast.

If you have any interesting in looking at this take a look at http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php which provides support for the download.

I believe that Apache is used in commercial sites more than IIS is. Apache started out as a product for UNIX and Linux and was ported to work with Windows. I find it much easier to work with than IIS.

Greetings,

Here is my link:
http://www.aurora4.addr.com/NewHampshireVolunteersReenactorsGazette/

I made my own banner, using Photoshop and Illustrator.

Rose, I am about to email you my zip.

I did this class website based on an article my oldest brother wrote. He had asked me to clean up a Powerpoint Presentation he made for his article. After I did that, I asked him if I could use his content and he said yes. So, I've used it for an InDesign newsletter, 4 years ago, and now this. This org does not exist...it is a mock scenario.

This is my "before" version, as I have not made my "update" and I will do that shortly.

Everything validated. I got really exasperated with IE because it displays slightly differently from the other browsers.

Bret, I too am interested in raptors (and I am real animal advocate). My other brother and I once saw The Raptor Project (from upstate NY) at a RI animal show. Amazing! Now, I am curious about the Vermont org. We have lots of red-tails near our yard. I have to watch Ziggy very closely when I take him for his walk because they will swoop down after him...pretty scary. I've interrupted them in 2 kills of smaller birds, inadvertently. They mean business. Also, although I have a healthy fear of them, they are the most amazingly skilled aerialists. My 2 brothers are pilots, so we are truly intrigued by them...that and hummingbirds.
